When WW1 finally came to an end, there was a considerable amount of rebuilding work required in all theaters of war. Many of the former military railways were put to good use during this rebuilding period.
When the war ended suddenly in 1918, locomotive & rolling stock manufacturers were still producing equipment at an incredible rate. These orders were canceled, but equipment was delivered straight to store where it was joined with equipment being retired from service in France. As a result, there was a considerable amount of cheap locomotives & light railway equipment available from late 1919.
Most of this equipment eventually put in good service in industry for many years afterwards. This section will attempt to cover some of these uses.
