The Imperial War Museum, is the UK's principal repository of former military equipment. It is split over three main sites which are/will be open to the public, London, Duxford & (opening soon) Manchester. The site at Duxford is based on a former WW2 airbase, and is now home to a huge collection of aircraft, many of which are in working order. The runway is in operational condition, and on many occasions, visiting aircraft may be seen. In addition to the aircraft, there is a land warfare hall. This building contains very early equipment, right through to post WW2 vehicles.
One of the exhibits within the hall is the WW1 collection. On display here is a 'Protected' 40hp Simplex, in a WW1 cameo scene. The track from this display leads through a substantial doorway, to the demonstration railway which follows part of the runway.
| Protected Motor Rail (MR1364/18) 'LR3085' is on display on a short length of demonstration track. This engine was subject to a very thorough restoration, involving regauging from Standard Gauge. | |

Recently moved here from the Museum of Army Transport (Beverley) is this (diesel engined) bow-frame 20hp Motor Rail. Anybody have any further (- replace (AT) with @ to make address work) details? Photo: Paul Jarman |
Also intended for this site is a Baldwin 4-6-0T. This engine, 'LR 794' (wn 44699) was imported from an Indian sugar plantation c1985 where it carried the name 'Tiger'. The locomotive is currently off site at a specialist engineering contractors being restored to working order. Does anyone have any further info/pictures of this or better shots of the WW1 section at Duxford? - please contact me.
Please e-mail me to add to this or any section.
