The Moseley Railway
Trust:
The Moseley tramway project was begun in 1969 as a railway society at Moseley Hall Grammar school in Cheadle, Stockport. At first the line used materials from a local brickworks, including a brick car as the basis of a horse drawn vehicle. After the move to the Moseley Boys school site in 1971, a complete locomotive worked system was acquired from a brickworks in Lincolnshire.
From an early stage, one of the society's aims was to acquire examples of many types of locomotives and wagons used in industry and in the NW UK in particular. The ultimate aim of the trust is to present this unique collection to the public in the form of a working museum. It is intended to recreate the atmosphere of a 'Light Railway' which may have provided a train service to the employees of industry or to the local populace.
In recent years more locomotives and rolling stock from the First World War have been added to the collection. Included are a wide range of exhibits in the collection originating from Quarries, mines, water treatment works, peat works, MOD, British Rail, etc.
At the end of 1996the Trust was given notice to vacate the site due to redevelopment and adaptation of the College to its expanding role as a tertiary college. This move, which has been forced upon them, has given a golden opportunity to develop a museum and railway on a new site from scratch. The Trust has sufficient existing material to provide a museum, which will could rival some of the best museum/narrow gauge railways in Wales or the South, and be unique in the North of England.
